The 90-Day ARRT Sonography Study Plan: Pass Your Registry Exam

A milestone-driven, 90-day roadmap to pass your ARRT Sonography exam with confidence. Clear weekly goals, resource recommendations, and practical study strategies.

You have submitted your application. Your test date is circled on the calendar. Now comes the part that keeps you up at night: actually preparing for the ARRT sonography registry exam.

If you are staring down 90 days and wondering how to turn that time into a passing score, you are in the right place. The good news? Three months is enough time to build a solid foundation, review every domain, and walk into that testing center with confidence. The key is structure—not cramming, not panic-studying the week before, but a methodical plan that respects both the breadth of the exam and your current work schedule.

Here is your week-by-week roadmap for ultrasound tech certification success.

Understanding What You Are Up Against

Before you crack open a single textbook, take an honest inventory of the ARRT Sonography exam itself. The registry covers five content categories: procedures and protocols, anatomy and physiology, patient care, physical principles, and instrumentation. Each category carries different weight, and your study time should reflect that.

The exam is 200 questions. You will have three hours and 45 minutes. Some questions are straightforward recall; others require you to synthesize information across domains—like identifying artifacts based on transducer frequency and tissue density.

Most importantly, know your baseline. If you graduated recently, your anatomy and patient care knowledge may be fresh. If you have been working as a limited-scope tech or in a related field, your procedural knowledge might be strong but your physics rusty. Tailor your 90-day ARRT study plan to your gaps, not a one-size-fits-all template.

Weeks 1-3: Build Your Foundation and Gather Resources

The first three weeks are about setting up for success. This is not yet the time for marathon study sessions—it is the time to organize, assess, and establish habits that will carry you through the next two months.

Week 1: Diagnostic Assessment

Take a full-length practice exam under timed conditions. Use an ARRT sonography exam prep resource like Kettering or Davies. Do not study beforehand—this is purely diagnostic. Your score does not matter; your weak areas do. Review every wrong answer and note which content categories trip you up.

Week 2: Resource Map

Gather your materials and commit to a study schedule. You will need:

  • A comprehensive review book (Edelman or the SPI Physics Study Guide are industry standards)
  • A question bank subscription (at least 1,000 practice questions)
  • Flashcards for anatomy, Doppler equations, and artifact recognition
  • Access to your original sonography program notes, if available

Block out study time on your calendar. Treat it like a shift you cannot miss. Even 90 minutes a day, six days a week, gives you over 80 hours of focused prep time.

Week 3: Content Category Deep Dive Begins

Start with your weakest category from the diagnostic exam. For many, that is physical principles and instrumentation—the physics, the math, the transducer mechanics. Spend this week reviewing foundational concepts: frequency, wavelength, acoustic impedance, attenuation, and the Doppler effect. Do not memorize formulas in isolation; understand what they describe and when they apply clinically.

Weeks 4-8: Systematic Content Review and Active Recall

This is the heart of your ultrasound tech certification preparation. You will move through each content category in order of exam weight, spending 7-10 days per domain. The goal is not passive reading—it is active engagement.

Week 4-5: Procedures and Protocols

Review standard scanning protocols for abdomen, OB/GYN, vascular, and any specialty areas covered in your sonography track. Focus on patient positioning, transducer selection, required views, and normal measurements. Use your question bank to test recall daily. Aim for 30-50 questions per session, reviewing rationales for both correct and incorrect answers.

Week 6: Anatomy and Physiology

This week is flashcard-heavy. Drill vascular anatomy, organ relationships, fetal development milestones, and cross-sectional imaging planes. Draw diagrams from memory. Label structures without looking. If you can teach it to someone else, you own it.

Week 7: Patient Care and Safety

Review infection control, patient communication, contrast protocols, emergency response, and legal-ethical considerations. This category often feels intuitive, but the ARRT asks nuanced questions about documentation, informed consent, and HIPAA compliance. Do not coast here.

Week 8: Instrumentation Deep Dive

Return to the physics, but now with a focus on how equipment settings affect image quality. Understand gain, time-gain compensation, focal zones, harmonic imaging, and color Doppler optimization. Know your artifacts—shadowing, enhancement, reverberation, mirror image, side lobe—and what causes each one.

Weeks 9-11: Integration, Practice Exams, and Weak-Spot Remediation

You have reviewed the content. Now you need to perform under exam conditions and fill any remaining gaps.

Week 9: First Full-Length Simulation

Take another complete 200-question practice exam, timed, in one sitting. Simulate test-day conditions: no phone, no notes, scheduled breaks only. Score it honestly. Compare your results to Week 1. You should see measurable improvement. Identify any categories where you scored below 70% and flag those for targeted review.

Week 10: Targeted Remediation

Spend this week exclusively on your remaining weak areas. If Doppler calculations still confuse you, work through every practice problem you can find. If fetal biometry tables are fuzzy, drill them until they are automatic. Use spaced repetition: review the same material on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

Week 11: Second Full-Length Simulation

Take one more complete practice exam mid-week. By now, you should be consistently scoring in the passing range (usually 75% or higher, depending on the scoring model). Review your mistakes, but do not over-study new material. Focus on reinforcing what you already know.

Weeks 12-13: Final Review, Rest, and Test-Day Logistics

The last two weeks are about confidence, not cramming.

Week 12: Light Review and Confidence Boosters

Do 25-50 practice questions daily, focusing on high-yield topics. Review your flashcards. Re-read your notes on artifacts and protocols. Do not introduce new study materials. Sleep seven to eight hours every night. Dehydration and exhaustion kill recall faster than lack of study time.

Week 13: Test Week

Three days before the exam, stop heavy studying. Do a final 50-question quiz to keep your brain engaged, then shift to logistics. Confirm your test center location, parking, and ID requirements. Pack your authorization letter and two forms of ID the night before. Eat a solid breakfast. Arrive 30 minutes early.

On exam day, read every question carefully. Flag tough ones and move on—do not let one question derail your focus. Trust your preparation.

You Have Got This

Ninety days is a meaningful window. It is long enough to review every content area, build real confidence, and enter that testing center knowing you are prepared. The ARRT sonography registry is not a test of perfection—it is a test of competence, and competence is built through consistent, structured effort.
