CT and MRI are the two most common cross-training choices for rad techs, and they could not be more different in pace, physics, pay trajectory, and daily reality. Choosing CT or MRI as your first dual modality is not just about what sounds interesting — it is about workflow fit, certification ROI, and how you want your next five years to unfold.

Learning Curve: What Each Modality Demands

Most rad techs report that the CT learning curve is steep for the first 90 days — especially around IV access, contrast timing, and protocol selection — but plateaus quickly once you understand the scanner interface and anatomy in cross-section. If you are confident with patient positioning and can think in slices, CT clicks faster.

MRI, by contrast, is a different language. The physics are rooted in magnetism and radio frequencies, not ionizing radiation. Pulse sequences, T1 versus T2 weighting, and artifact troubleshooting require you to unlearn some X-ray instincts and rebuild your mental model from scratch. For CT certification, you need:

  • 16 hours of structured CT education
  • 125 clinical CT procedures documented under supervision
  • Passing the ARRT CT registry exam

Most techs complete CT certification in 6 to 12 months while working part-time in CT or through a dedicated cross-training program. The exam covers physics, patient care, imaging procedures, and safety — all grounded in concepts you already know.

For MRI certification, you need:

  • Current ARRT(R) credential in Radiography (or Nuclear Medicine, or Radiation Therapy)
  • 16 hours of structured MRI education
  • 125 clinical MRI procedures documented under supervision
  • Passing the ARRT MRI registry exam

The timeline is similar — 6 to 12 months — but the exam is widely considered harder because the physics content is less intuitive. You are memorizing TR, TE, flip angles, and gradient behavior, not tweaking kVp and mAs. Budget more study hours.

Cost Considerations

Both exams cost $200. Online review courses range from $300 to $800. The real cost is the clinical supervision period — some hospitals pay you your full rate while cross-training; others pay a lower “trainee” rate or require you to work extra shifts unpaid until you hit 125 exams. Ask upfront.

Pay Bump and Market Demand

This is where the career math gets interesting. Dual-modality techs earn more — but how much more depends on geography, facility type, and which combination you hold.

A rad tech with CT certification typically sees a pay increase of $3 to $6 per hour over base radiography rates. In high-demand metro markets, that can mean $28 to $38 per hour as a CT tech, versus $24 to $30 for X-ray only. CT is high-volume, fast-paced, and critical to ER workflow, so hospitals value the flexibility.

A rad tech with MRI certification often commands $4 to $8 per hour more than base rates, especially in outpatient imaging centers and specialty hospitals. MRI techs are harder to find, the equipment is more expensive, and the liability around safety is higher. Expect $30 to $42 per hour in many markets, with premium pay for evening or weekend MRI-only shifts.

If your goal is the highest immediate pay bump, MRI wins — but only if you can find enough MRI volume to justify the hire. Smaller hospitals may only run one or two MRI scanners and already have coverage. CT suites, by contrast, often run 24/7 and need cross-trained staff for flex scheduling.

Travel and Per Diem Leverage

Dual modality opens travel contracts and per diem gigs that single-modality techs cannot touch. A rad tech who is ARRT(R)(CT) can pick up high-paying travel assignments in underserved areas where one tech covers both X-ray and CT. Add MRI later, and you become a unicorn — hospitals will compete for you.

If you are eyeing travel nursing-style flexibility, start with whichever modality your local market needs most. Build 18 months of solid experience, then add the second. That is when the big money and scheduling freedom kick in.

Daily Workflow and Lifestyle Fit

CT is fast. You might scan 40 to 60 patients in a 12-hour shift — head CTs for stroke rule-outs, chest CTs for pulmonary embolism, abd/pelvis for acute abdomens. It is protocol-driven, high-adrenaline, and deeply integrated with emergency and surgical services. If you thrive in controlled chaos and like being essential to rapid decision-making, CT fits.

MRI is slower and more methodical. You might scan 8 to 15 patients in a shift, depending on complexity. Each study takes 30 to 60 minutes. You spend more time talking to patients (claustrophobia is real), more time optimizing sequences, and more time troubleshooting artifacts. If you prefer depth over speed and want space to perfect each exam, MRI is your match.

Think about your energy style. Do you recharge by moving fast and switching gears every 10 minutes? CT. Do you recharge by going deep, solving puzzles, and working with fewer interruptions? MRI.
