If you’ve been a physical therapist for more than a week, you know the feeling. You walk into the treatment room, greet your patient, and before you can even ask how they’re doing, you hear it: “So... you’re going to fix me in one session, right?”
Cue the internal smile. The knowing nod. The gentle explanation you’ve given a thousand times before.
Every PT has a mental bingo card of phrases we hear on repeat — some funny, some endearing, some that make us bite our tongue just a little. And if we’re being honest? That predictability is part of what makes this job so human. So we made it official: here’s your printable PT bingo card, filled with the classics we all know and love. 🤍
The Free Center Square
Let’s start with the gimme. Every bingo card needs a free space, and in the PT world, there’s only one phrase that qualifies:
“My doctor said I need therapy.”
This one appears in approximately 98% of evaluations. It’s the opening line, the reason they’re here, and the launching point for every intake conversation. Bonus points if they can’t remember which body part the doctor was concerned about, or if they hand you a crumpled prescription from three months ago.
Mark that center square. You’ve already won just by showing up to work today.
The Top Row: Optimism and Expectations
Patients come to us with hope — and sometimes, with expectations shaped by late-night infomercials and that one friend who swears their chiropractor cured everything in two visits. Here are the phrases that live in the ‘hopeful but slightly unrealistic’ category:
- “You’re going to fix me in one session, right?” — We love the confidence, truly. But let’s talk about tissue healing timelines and the importance of home exercises.
- “I saw this stretch on YouTube...” — Sometimes it’s legit. Sometimes it’s a recipe for making things worse. Always an adventure.
- “How long until I can run a marathon?” — Asked by someone who hasn’t run in six years and came in for knee pain after walking up a flight of stairs.
- “I don’t need the exercises. Just fix me here.” — If only our hands had that kind of magic. Spoiler: the real magic is neuroplasticity and consistent effort.
- “This is just like what happened to my friend’s cousin.” — And now we’re diagnosing by anecdote. Deep breath. Redirect to the eval.
The Middle Rows: Compliance and Home Programs
Ah, the home exercise program. The cornerstone of rehab. The thing we spend 15 minutes customizing, printing, and explaining... only to hear one of these gems at the next visit:
- “I did the exercises... well, most of them... okay, I did them once.” — Honesty is appreciated. Sort of.
- “I lost the handout.” — We’ll print another. And another. And one more for the road.
- “I do this at home all the time.” — Narrator: They do not do this at home all the time.
- “How many times a day do I really need to do these?” — We said three. They heard ‘maybe one if I feel like it.’
- “Can I just come here instead of doing them at home?” — If only insurance agreed with that plan.
The HEP struggle is real. But every once in a while, you get that one patient who does every single rep, tracks their progress, and comes back stronger. Those are the visits that remind you why you became a PT in the first place.
The Bottom Rows: Pain, Progress, and the Inevitable
Pain is complicated. Progress is nonlinear. And patients are trying to make sense of both, which leads to some truly iconic lines:
- “It hurt after I did [the exact thing you told them not to do].” — We’re not mad. Just... creatively challenged.
- “I feel great today! I don’t think I need to come anymore.” — And we’ll see you back here in two weeks when it flares up again.
- “It hurts here. No wait, here. Actually, everywhere.” — Time to break out the body chart and some really good listening skills.
- “Is this normal?” — The most asked question in all of rehab. The answer is almost always ‘yes, let me explain why.’
- “Will I ever be 100% again?” — The question that requires equal parts clinical knowledge, empathy, and realistic goal-setting.
And then there’s the one that seals the bingo card:
“Can I get a prescription for more visits?”
Because just when they were ready to graduate, they realized they actually like coming to PT. Or their insurance is about to reset. Or they just really enjoy your company. Either way, it’s a win.
Why We Love This Job Anyway
Here’s the thing about PT bingo: every single one of these phrases comes from a real human being who is in pain, confused, hopeful, or just trying to get back to the life they had before the injury. Yes, we hear the same questions on repeat. Yes, we gently correct the same misconceptions every single week.
But that repetition? It means we’re reaching people. It means they trust us enough to ask. It means they showed up, even when it’s hard.
The physical therapist humor we share with our colleagues — the inside jokes, the bingo cards, the ‘you won’t believe what my 2 o’clock said today’ stories — isn’t about making fun of patients. It’s about finding lightness in a job that requires us to hold space for people’s pain, frustration, and fear every single day. It’s therapy humor that keeps us sane and reminds us we’re not alone in this work.
So print this bingo card. Share it with your PT colleagues at lunch. Laugh about the free space. And then go back into the clinic and do what you do best: listen, educate, and help people move better.
